Elkton Town Hall, May 19, 2010 - In a unanimous vote the mayor and commissioners approved a collective bargaining agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). A defined benefits retirement plan for the rank and file, one of the sticking points in the negotiations, was included in the contract. When Commissioner Piner motion to approve the agreement, he made remarks indicating his strong support for finally settling the matter, which has a long, complicated history. Law enforcement made up a large portion of the audience and the commissioner received a hearty round of applause from appreciative FOP supporters. The bulk of the audience is here this evening in support of the police.
Later in the session, three employees from other Elkton departments asked the commissioners for similar benefits for all municipal workers. “All the employees need some kind of equitable pension plan. It should have been considered at the same time,” one of the representatives advised the commissioners.
