This afternoon the mayor and commissioners will be discussing important matters at a workshop. They’ll hear about the need to collect additional revenue for the utility system since shortfalls are occurring beyond those they’ve already identified. At a June meeting, the town board voted to raise sewer rates about 60%, but after they did that they were informed the major facility fund needed nearly a half-million dollars in additional revenue. Money for this fund comes from assessments they make a new construction projects. That caused the board to order another rate study to see how that revenue would be assessed so they’ll hear about that this evening. Also on the agenda is discussion about the pension system for non-police employees.
Here’s the official agenda. Citizens interested in understanding decisions in Elkton will find the workshops most helpful for it is at these meetings that the town board thoroughly discusses an issue, gathers facts, and takes a straw vote on whether to approve something. At the regular meeting, they typically formalize the straw vote, without any detailed discussion.
