“The country’s falling apart,” Cuffs said, leaning against his booth at the North Street Hotel. I knew a lot of things were messed up—the economy, unemployment, crime, health care, energy, even religion. But I waited for Cuffs to explain. “Congress,” he said, pausing to allow me to prepare for what was coming next. I sat down and suggested Cuffs give the newly elected gang of lawmakers a chance.
“No way!” he said. “It’s gonna be the same old thing. Nothing ever changes, except the calendar. But. I got this plan,” Cuffs added, waving a copy of his letter he had sent to new House Speaker John Boehner. “This is a blueprint to save us all, and I’m hoping he takes my advice when they all get back to work. Of course, I haven’t heard back yet.”
